Slots, RTP and volatility explained

What a slot paytable can tell you, why RTP is not a session forecast, and how volatility differs from return.

FROST editorial · Reviewed 19 October 2026

RTP describes a model, not your next session

Return to player, or RTP, is a theoretical long-run return calculated for a particular game configuration. It is not a promise that you will receive that percentage of your own deposits back. A short session can produce results far from a theoretical average.

For illustration, an RTP of 96% describes a mathematical model returning 96 units per 100 units wagered over a very large number of plays. It does not mean that a player depositing 100 will finish with 96, and it does not predict the sequence of wins and losses.

Check the version inside the game

The same game title can be offered in different configurations. Read the help screen or paytable of the version you are about to play. A percentage copied from a provider’s promotional page or another casino may not describe that specific implementation.

Bonus-buy features, optional bets or different modes can have their own rules. Check their cost, stated return where published and how they affect the stake. Do not assume a feature is included in the displayed base-game value.

Volatility answers a different question

Volatility describes how variable outcomes are within the game’s model. A higher-volatility game may produce longer periods without meaningful wins and more uneven outcomes. It does not make a big result due after a losing run.

Two games can have similar RTP values and very different distributions of results. Neither measure tells you when a win will happen. A maximum-win figure is an upper bound under specified conditions, not a likely or expected payout.

Read these paytable details

  • The minimum and maximum stake, including optional features.
  • How symbols pay and whether the game uses lines, ways or clusters.
  • Which combinations trigger free spins or other features.
  • Any stated RTP for the selected configuration.
  • The rules for interrupted play and unfinished rounds.

Game thumbnails on FROST are illustrations of titles, not evidence that a title is available in your country or at every casino. The operator’s current local lobby is the source for availability.

Use a budget, not a prediction system

Do not increase your stake because a game has been quiet or because you want to recover previous losses. Past results do not establish that a particular next result is due. Decide what you can afford to spend on entertainment before opening a game and keep a separate limit on time.

Demo play can help explain controls and paytable rules, but a demo result does not predict real-money outcomes. Read our responsible gambling information for practical account controls.
